August 3rd, 2002: Get Ready for Canada's Hemp Weekend on August 10th

Cannabis sativa is the Latin name for hemp. Translated it means "useful plant." Industrial hemp is a source of incredible food and strong renewable fibres for clothing, paper and industry. Grown worldwide, hemp is playing a role in creating more environmentally-friendly farming and manufacturing. Canada is becoming an active leader in hemp production and research.

On August 10th Canadians in Ontario and Saskatchewan will have a chance to explore and celebrate industrial hemp on Canada's Hemp Weekend.

Public festivals will be held outside Regina, Saskatchewan and Barrie, Ontario.

In Barrie Ontario, Hempola Family Farm Festival (August 10 and 11, 2002) is shaping into a unique and enlightening two-day carnival occasion geared to families and people of all ages. The festival is an innocent, informative and high quality event held right alongside the Hempola hemp fields. Following the event's debut in 2001, this year the activities and attractions have nearly doubled in size. Features include:

Hempola Valley Farms has definitely planned something for everyone. Hours are Saturday Aug 10th and Sunday Aug 11th 10AM to 6PM (For more information visit www.hempola.com, or call 1-800-240-9215).

Proceeds of the Hempola Valley Farm Festival will go to the Ontario Hemp Alliance, www.ontariohempalliance.org , the provincial industry association.

In Regina Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Hemp Association is hosting its annual festival in a hemp field: "Field". Field is a casual, fun event that brings city and country together in an eclectic mix of education, discovery and culture. A music mainstage will entertain with a great mix of musicians, DJ's and dance performers. This year's Field Festival starts at 2 pm in the afternoon and will go until early in the morning. The Festival also features:

Field 2002 is a nonprofit event. Proceeds to benefit the Saskatchewan Organic Directorate's (SOD) Organic Protection Fund, CJTR 91.3 FM Community Radio, the SHA and our hardworking performing artists. Field 2002 is an all weather, all ages, common sense event.

The SHA invites you to come down and get lost in the field. (see www.saskhemp.com/field2002.html or call 306- 757-4367)

Organisers of both festivals say that these public festivals are an excellent way to educate the public, have some summer fun, and give some hemp to the community.
